About Our Group!

Q: What style of dancing do you do?
A:
The Cardinal Whirlwinds perform traditional American dances, primarily from the Western tradition. Though best known for squares and waltzes, the group also does contras, circles, mixers, rounds (such as waltz, two-step, polka, and cha-cha), and a few international folk dances. As with many parts of American culture, traditional Western dancing evolved from many sources, so bits of other cultures are readily recognizable in many of the figures and dances. The trademark styling of the smooth, gliding steps, proud bearing, and long full skirts with plenty of twirls is the legacy from the Spanish/Mexican heritage of the American West.

Q: I have never square danced. In fact I’m not exactly sure what square dancing is. Is that okay?
A:
Of course. Everyone is welcome to audition in the fall. We teach basic figures in addition to more complex patters, so just hold out your hands and smile. And remember, “if you can walk, you can dance.”

Q: Do I need a partner?
A:
Unlike many square dance groups, we do not limit ourselves to either singles or couples. Everyone is welcome.

Q: What are your costumes like?
A:
For performances our ladies wear the traditional ankle-length dresses with long petticoats and pantaloons for the western dancing. The gents are in cowboy boots (of course) and western-styled shirts. At rehearsals and other dances, informal attire is encouraged, although we do recommend smooth-soled shoes, since they slide more easily over the floor.

Q: At what kinds of events do you perform?
A:
Just about anything you can think of: international festivals, county fairs, rodeos, conventions, Stanford dance exhibitions, and private parties, including school groups, church groups, girl scouts, senior citizens, and many others.
